I hired Blake Harris of Universal Legal for a parenting plan and child support matter and paid over $6,300 across a retainer, a "trust account" demand, and an initial consultation. A few concrete issues from my experience: The engagement agreement requires invoices to be itemized by service category. I received an unsubstantiated request for an additional $1,200 to the trust account with no itemization provided. The agreement also requires 10 days' notice of withdrawal under RPC 1.16. Mr. Harris withdrew the same day a critical motion was due, leaving me to scramble for new counsel 9 days before a scheduled hearing. I had provided the requested financial documentation well before the stated deadline. Mr. Harris later described the documents as arriving "last minute," which doesn't match the actual timeline of when they were sent. Despite months of back-and-forth and repeated document requests (several for materials already provided and billed for), the case reached a late-stage crisis over financial reconciliation that could have been caught much earlier. I ultimately had to retain new counsel on short notice to keep my case on track. If left with no option and you're evaluating this firm, I'd recommend asking upfront about their document review process and getting billing itemization in writing from day one. Univeral and Blake Harris have 5 well earned stars for a reason. I’ve been through two divorces now, the first one I hired a big name local firm that charged me 25K and made a mess of my case. This time around I did not have much hope at all for ANY family law attorney but from the jump Blake proved to be a good dude. I know honesty and attorney are two words that usually don’t go together but Blake is an honest guy. His billing is honest and fair. When he doesn’t know something he’s honest about it. If he perceives himself or his office to have made a mistake he will eat the cost. Blake's office is located right near the courthouse, which made things very convenient. I was referred to Blake, and during our initial consultation he immediately identified key points we could pursue in my case that my previous representation had not brought up. That gave me real confidence that he'd fight for the best outcome for my family, which he did. Compared to my previous family law attorney, I felt like I received much better communication and coordination with Blake and his team. I feel so grateful that I found Blake and his team, they carried me through my divorce. The whole process was a bit scary for me but they were always available to answer all my questions and really held my hand in helping me understand our financial situation when dividing up property. Blake was very kind and helpful to me during my divorce. I always felt like he took the time to listen to me and to explain things I didn't understand. I never felt unimportant or rushed, or like I was a bother. My divorce was a hard, stressful time in my life, but Blake helped me navigate the legal side of it with confidence and kindness. I was honestly preparing myself for the worst outcome. I ended up having to go to trial because my ex would not settle the case for what I thought was reasonable. We ended up getting more than I expected, and Blake and his team were on it every step of the way and very communicative. I’m so glad I found Universal Legal, my expectations were truly exceeded. Highly recommend!
